  • American Land Cress

I planted some American Land Cress seeds in a pot in the hope of getting a few plants to vary my winter leaves collection. Been there for weeks and nothing has germinated - even the parsnip has beat it to it.
Is it difficult to germinate ?
Should I be growing it - I think I saw somewhere on here it can spread all over the place.
    Is it worth resowing.
It was a new packet of seed. I had the same problem with Lambs Lettuce.

I've grown land cress and lamb's lettuce before - some years ago I admit, but I don't remember any problem with germination. I didn't have a problem with it spreading either - I assume that's if you let it go to seed Alice.
Try it again. I think I sowed them in Autumn to get over-wintered crops. they were good.

I have planted some of these this year too for the first time. They took AGES to germinate and the growth now is very slow

Thanks Flummery and Serenity. It is early in the year and there is no rush for leaves I want for the winter. I think I'll leave it for a bit and resow, and see if they do better then. Anybody else got any ideas, or had any success. I'm not looking for anything fikey. I thought they would be sure fire.

Thanks for cheering me up! I just sown some seed.
It's not the growing old I mind but the growing stupid with it!

I;ll hold fire with mine then! Its still very chilly at times and quite a difference still between day and night temperatures.

I sowed some a few days ago - nothing yet, but I'll report back as and when they germinate. Never done it before, but fancied it as an 'easier' (?) alternative to watercress - which I love.

these are my land cress seedlings at about 4 weeks planted in a large cat litter tray from the pound shop
I had planned to grow as a cut and come again crop but acording to joy larcom this is not always a sucess as they may not resprout so I plan on thinning out later today. She also says 8 weeks from sowing to cropping so these guys have some growing to do

What a surprise. I was going to rid of the pot with the landcress and call it a dud, but I looked, they had germinated. Puny looking seedlings. As for 8 weeks from sowing to cropping - they've been 4 weeks germinating. I thought they were slow cropping and I'm really growing them for winter leaves. Looks like that'll be about right at present rate of progress.
