      Or compacting the soil 4 inches under where you are going to grow them.

      I've had tender and true a good 4 inches deep but 6 inches wide; when I had the problem above.

        Tender and True for me, but given the replies I might try Gladiator or White King

          im growing tender and true and gladiator this year in the same bed.Gladiator are more stumpy than the long T&T

            Maybe I could insert a paving slab underneath to halt them in their quest downwards ........

              White King - I've still got some in the garden and will try to remember to take a photo next time I dig some up. Very sandy soil here, so nothing to stop them from going deeeep down if they wanted but they obviously don't want

                have tryed something different every year,gladiator was a good size last year,
                this year got student,all variety of sizes,they seem quite tasty
                next year have got white king to try,the packet says medium roots,but have read the other comments,also i think it depends on the weather and the time of planting,god,i love parsnips in anything savoury,
                sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of these
