Leek Varieties - seeking two new ones for 2011

Hi all, am looking to grow two different leek varieties this next growing season. Have always grown Musselburgh, don't know why, just have. Would love to try maybe an old variety and also a great one for taste/reliability in harsh weather. Any ideas as these are not something I have "adventured" on before?

I'll be interested in any recomendations too. My leek seed saving venture was a disaster so I need to buy some and i've only ever used musselburgh too.

Just have got blue's to sow next year - they look nice when it's frosty anyway

I am looking at BDS funnily enough. It's in the real seeds catalogue. How thin is thin BiP? Either of you harvested for taste? Is it standing up to Welsh weather Chris?

Anyone grown Jaune de Poitou, Meziers or Monstreux de Charentan?

They stood find in last winter, VVg... the weight of the snow broke a few mind.

Taste wise, to me - they all taste the same.

I got mine from RS too... I'll be growing some at home inthe borders to save seed from/shave them

Shave them? Huh?! I'll order some then - have you tried others from RS? All four varieties for 2012 sound nice. I might order the yellow one too.

Well, bar the looks as I've said - I can't taste any difference, so to me I don't mind anymore, as I'm growing on my allotment rather than trying to have a good looking veg patch

I just wanted two new ones to just try something different really. We use leeks a lot in our cooking or onions so am trying to refocus on my alliums

I've just found my leek seed collection. I'm horrified that I have so many.
Carentan x2, Lyon Prizetaker x2, Musselburgh x2, Autumn Giant, Bleu de Solaise, and Blue Green Winter. Also Baby Leek Atal. With between 300 and 500 seeds per packet I could grow about 3000 leeks. I know I'm Welsh but I can't eat that many!!
