  • Have been away with the fairies again....

.....but yesterday I sowed some more cauliflowers in to modules as the ones I sowed way too early in January had been....well completely neglected....and were pretty much dead! They'd got all leggy etc so binned them and have started again.

          • Yay! Maintenance week, time to catch up and say that last root week I planted:-
Carrots in loo rolls - Nantes for baby carrots in the tunnel.
Kohl Rabi - De Vienna Bianco and Purple Vienna - this is to "compare" with growing in leaf week also the Bianco is to compare with the Vienna which just runs to long stems too often for my liking so I want to know if it's something I'm doing or the variety. These are in modules and will either be for tunnel or garden depending on our weather, it's grim outside the polythene and could be for another two months, yet.
Leeks - Musselburgh and Autumn Mammoth- deffinitely going to trench these when they get planted out- seems so logical.
Celeriac - Monarch-horribly old seed so fingers crossed-in propogator with light.
Radish - Sparkler and Spring onions into tunnel bed.
Garlic - in biodegradeable pots hidden in a cool spot to try and get enough cold days in before planting out - probably half in and half out.
New potatoes in towers in tunnel - "earthed up" or whatever the term is.

Potted on peppers from Feb sowings and moved out into a cloch in the tunnel.

Sudden panic there - but Fennel is leafy (except like Kohl Rabi and Turnips I want its energy down not up. Could need to check this.)

Next weekend-must draw out garden and tunnel maps and update blog.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

            • Is kohl rabi a root?

I was wondering if herb fennel (llike bronze fennel) would be leafy but then wondered if bulb fennel (florence fennel) would be root? Or are they both leaf?

              • my book says kohl rabbi is a root and both fennels are leafy

It's a fruit day, so I've sown a row of peas on the plot and all my tomatoes are now in the propagator.

I fink spring has sprung, a lovely warm day today - made me

Biologically, Kohl Rabi is a swollen stem and I went with leaf on the initial basis that it is still above ground production (some sources say leaf and some root). However, you actually want the "energy" of production downwards, hence my reason for having a look to see if there is any difference between the two sowings (obviously not a "fair" trial as not planted at the same time but I might repeat it - we do like Kohl). When I was writing my post above I suudenly realised I hadn't planted Bulb Fennel but on checking it is down as a leaf but by the same logic as Kohl Rabi (or even turnips) it could just as easily be a "root".

The whole idea is new to me, I'm very open to it as I said somewhere early on but I do want to see some logic to the groupings or sensible explanations to exceptions like cucumber.

                      • Hi all - its maintenance week for me too, but today I couldn't face the compost pile - they've found a missing person that they've been pulling out of the river directly opposite for most of the day. It made me feel very sick. So sorry I wasn't here to help with questions.
