Foul Medames

Whilst browsing through the dried beans section at my local greengrocer I found a packet of these Turkish / Egyptian fava beans.

They look just like broad beans to me so I wondered if anyone had tried growing them? I have half a packet left and will be trying these out!

Has anyone tasted them? Apparently they are eaten for breakfast! And they are called either foul or ful Medames

They are small broad beans IMO and very nice they are too.

They are the same thing, Jeanie. Just like small and large lentils of colour.

That recipe sounds great, have you tried it? What do the fava beans look like, are they different to normal broad beans?

Turkish beans are not eaten at breakfast. There is a recipe for Fasulye and rice, which is a national peasant staple, often eaten as an entree or a supper snack. Beans are cheap and substitute meat, which is very expensive in Turkey. I lived on this for four years

Well Binners did'nt you have some of them off me last summer? Can't wait to try growing them.
SBP they look identical to small broad beans - about the same size as those shelled and dried from my smaller bean pods. I reckon this will work you know folks!

Whoops VVG these are definitely fava beans - they have the characteristic black scar down one side- I have always wanted to make broad bean hummus so these have potential!

They still don't eat them for brekkie and the only beans I saw the Turks eat in abundance were the good old white ones. Maybe in Egypt...
