  • Carrot Fly...Resistafly & Rainbow

    Hello All,

I have a load of resistafly carrot seeds that intend on planting this year as last years crop got munched extensively by carrot fly despite my best efforts to protect it etc....

My question is though - if I take the same precautions (which seem to be useless to stopping the little blighters) with resistafly, but also plant Rainbow carrots along side them - am I dooming the Rainbows to be the target of the fly in lieu of a tasty bite of Resistafly? - in that they would be a more favourable target - almost decoy?...

Seems a shame just to grow them to get eaten - and not be me!

    Cheers

    Simon

I find that I can control carrot fly with netting but I did once look at buying the resistant varieties. As I remember they recomend (or used to) that you grow them next to a sacrificial variety to keep the resistant ones clear if that makes sense.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Cover them with fleece or enviromesh, that's my best advice, mooncat.

My best results so far (and it's not been a scientific thingy, just anecdotal) have been from June sowings, theoretically after the root fly has been & gone. Those sowings had much less damage than earlier ones
