As I said above, I earth up somewhat when planting. This gives a bit of protection from early frost and allows me to remember where I put my rows. On Sunday I earthed up again. Most spuds had leaves through. Mainly this is to prevent damage from another frost, but it's also because the more shoots that come off the main stem below ground, the more spuds you get. Even with several earthings up you can still get the odd green (therefore wasted) spud. Pros and cons. I suppose I take a middle ground. I don't grow acres of spuds so I don't find it a big time waster to do it twice.
