I grew some potatoes in a mix of multipurpose compost and top soil last year in a raised bed - had real success, but the potatoes tasted very very earthy, what am I doing wrong, I bought the seed pots from a local garden centre and they grew fine.

Do you mean floury? If you look on some seed potato suppliers' websites, they will actually tell you which are 'floury', which are 'waxy' and so on. So, as Jelliebabe said, it could be the variety you grew is a floury one and suited to use in stews, mash and similar, rather than a boiled/baked spud.
