Yes they would, some of them. Depends how big your container is. However, root size isn't the only thing to consider when deciding whether to plant in pots, tubs or indeed dustbins.
You also have to consider the soil needed (acid or alkaline), firmness of soil, and final size of mature plant.
For those reasons, I reckon it would be more challenging (but not impossible) to grow sprouts in a container.

I've done a web search and phone local garden centres and there are no 100mtr deep pots to be found!

Thank goodness for that - I look forward to your veg show exhibits; but you'd be lethal with 100m deep pots

Daylily 'planet earth' not a good reply the only growing medium on this planet that is 100mtrs deep is the sea and there you might just have some trouble with your spade work.

                Chocolate,

Many grapes use the Morrison's black bucket, these are the black buckets that cut flowers come in. Last year they were 98p for eight to buy but many people manage to scrounge some for free. All they need is a hole for drainage.

I also use plastic dustbins, plastic buckets, polystyrene fish boxes of various sizes and old plastic water tanks, like the ones in most peoples lofts.

I do have some ordinary planters but as they break I try now to replace them with recycled stuff. I find I can't look at things now without thinking what could I grow in that.

Colin there is a Morrisons near me where I go for petrol, hate shopping there but I think I could push the boat out & spend 98p for the buckets.

                  Kudos to you.

Have to say I've never seen them on sale - is this a year round thing or maybe just to clear them out once or twice a year?

Usually on sale most of the time, I believe other stores do them as well I know grapes have obtained them from all sorts of places. A Morrisons pot is just a way of describing a certain type of container here on the vine.

They're on sale every day: you'll find the Morrisons flower buckets underneath their cut flowers/pot plants (at least you do in ours)

A brilliant idea but I don't know if I'd get enough buckets in the car.

I'm not sure the hall roof will be enough my exhibits will have to go outside. Still, it will give the committee something to talk about!

I use the infamous Morrisons flower buckets, the 10p "bags for life" which many supermarkets have, discarded plastic boxes found here at work for office moves. I've also managed to get some suitable plastic containers from garden centres which they have put out for recycling. I've also used the green potato bags from the pound shop.
