Growing tomatoes in hanging baskets

Hi there, i am planning to grow 5 different types of tomatoes - one type being hundreds and thousands. I have managed to get 4 hanging baskets off freecycle (there brand new to!) and have 2 already. What i am after is how many plants can i fit in the basket, i was thinking of 2 of will that be to over crowded?

It obviously depends on the size of the baskets. I have some shaped like an inverted pyramid, they are 10" square at the top and about 8" deep I grow 1 Tumbler per basket. I tried two one year and got less crop as the plants were over crowded.

I grew ONE 100s and 1000s in a hanging basket last year and it filled it

I grow 2 tumbler or gardenperle to a 16 inch hemispherical basket and get a good crop (10 pounds + per basket)but you have to keep on top of the watering,and I line the baskets with old compost bags leaving a drainage hole half way up,they are less susceptible to blight up there too,never had it in hanging baskets even when all else has turned to brown slime

i have been messing about with growing in h baskets for the last 3 - 4 yrs stick to 1 plant per basket and you will need to be very busy with the watering can

I've got some hanging baskets just the same as that got them at the ideal home exhibition - they certainly wern't £3.49 (or even £8 something!) I think they are brill! REally easy to use and I did two for my mum as well. They were great. I'm certainly using mine again this year (with trailing tomatoes too!)

Snap them up for £3.49 - I might get another couple!

thanks for the replies guys, my baskets are 14 inches. So, i might try 2 per basket. I will line them with old compost bags like snakeshack suggested. x

Been doing tumbling toms for the last couple of years with great success.

Done over 20 plants last year.

My rules are as follows;

10" basket = 1 plant
14" basket = 2 plants
16" basket = 3 plants (this one can get heavy so make sure its well supported)

Pot growbag medium in the baskets mixed with bfb and water retaining crystals.

They grow nicely for me in baskets too, just make sure you don't mix any up if you are growing other types - had a doozy in one large basket last year where a bush tomato found its way in there next to a mini one!

I say every year I'll label, but there's always several somethings!

always have a problem with the label fairy,usually visits when I say "has anybody knocked my plants over again" and am assured no-one has been anywhere near

I grew them the 100s and 1000s last year in pots placed on top of a bench and they were extremely hardy! Had 1 per 8 inch pot and had an ok harvest (I always wondered where the ripe ones had gone, until I saw my dog picking them off very gently. She does the same to brambles and raspberries!!!).

So this year Ill have them hanging high as well. I'm planning to put one plant in with bush basil & some petunia's to add some interest. Re the watering, I want to add an upside down plastic bottle I can fill up, hopefully hidden by the bush basil.

Just ordered my 14" hanging baskets from Arkay (bargain!!) and am going to try F1 Totem in them...
Would Sweet Baby be ok to grown in them too??

Have never grown tomatoes before, so a new experience awaits me!! Will also grow some Roma, Gardener's Delight and Tamina too, probably in Gro-bags I think....
