Growing Sweet potatoes from tubers
Collapse

I've just tipped out my sprouting tubers and the shoots that had roots I've carefully removed and potted up as separate plants. I've 3 so far, and lots more sprouts are coming on. They are growing quite quickly now.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
Now a little Shrinking Violet.

My sweet potatoes are doing something! There are 4 halves suspended in water. One has a tiny root another has two teeny weeny little shoots at the top and the other 2 are still sitting there, sleeping. I expected them all to reaat in the same way - all root, or all shoot. Seems they're more versatile than I thought!

Mine are now providing temptation for greenfly. I don't know where they came from, but each day I'm squishing any I find. I've had to give my biggest plants canes now, they began twining amongst themselves, like bindweed. Altogether 10 plants now, I don't think the tubers will provide any more shoots. I think they will outgrow my kitchen soonLast edited by BarleySugar; 17-03-2012, 07:38 PM.I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I am very tempted by this:-
Sweet Potato Growing Kit - Seed Potatoes - Vegetables - Gardening - Suttons Seeds and Plants

The 4 half tubers that I was attempting to grow are basically unchanged since the 4th April, although they have more roots and the shooting one has leaves . The 4th one is as dead as a Dodo.
Whether to pot them up is the question?
UPDATE; I've just potted up the shooted and the best rooted ones. Now lets see what happensLast edited by veggiechicken; 05-07-2012, 08:43 PM.
