Peas in a greenhouse....

I've started some meteor peas in guttering in my greenhouse. They are now about 3inches and their tendrils are now appearing. Its time to plant them.

Is it worth planting them in the greenhouse border and will they be ready before the toms go in. Any one tried this?

The alternative is outside under a polythene cloche!

I was under the impression that meteor peas were hardy?
If so, then you could gently get them used to being outside, (ie take them out in the daytime and bring them back at night) for a week or so and then plant out...

Last garden season's bad winter weather destroyed my meteor peas,they are staying under cover for another month at least.

I always start off peas and broad beans in large tubs in the greenhouse so that they stay under cover as long as they need to. That way I'm guaranteed an early crop.

I am growing mine in plastic tubs in greenhouse for the first time, not doing too bad at the moment. I am thinking of introducing a bit heat to keep the frost off. The type is also Meteor.

I started some mangetout early last year and put into the greenhouse bed - they did come through before the outside ones, but not that much - I think I'll stick to pea shoots from the GH this year rather than use the bed...

I'll be sowing some Poppet peas and Norli mangetout in guttering in the next few weeks for planting out in the polytunnel. Last year I was cropping both a good month or so earlier than anything outside and used the bed for sweet potatoes afterwards.

Oooh, I have peas and beans to plant too. Does that mean I can sown stuff in the Wendy house? The seeds keep looking at me. I don't usually start planting legumes til around St. Patrick's day.

You can plant hardier peas and broad beans but I wouldn't do any other kind of bean this early as they're not hardy enough. That said, I have had a good crop of Crystal Ice French beans (dwarf ones) in the polytunnel from a Feb sowing in the past but you do have to protect against late frosts. Not bothering this year as I want the space for something else but am still doing the peas and mange tout and probably a few broad beans.
