Is it to early to start sowing seeds?

Hi

I am desperate to start sowing some seeds this weekend. My first growing season was last year but i feel i started late as I planted my first lot of seeds in April.

Am I to early in the year to start? I live in hampshire, have a unheated greenhouse but do have seed trays with plastic lids i can use.

I do want to start my tomatoes and sweet peppers, leeks off soon.

All you experts out there can you let me know if i should wait till next month or should i just go ahead and start sowing?

I'm no expert but I believe you can get away with sowing now with a bit of care and attention especially on frosted nights with a bit of fleece
Broad beans
Onion seeds
Leeks

With greater care
Tomatoes
Chillis

I cant wait either, and have planted onion seeds two weeks ago in a cold greenhouse, but in a propagator. Do they take a while to germinate? I have put onion sets in pots to get a good root system going so that made me feel a bit like life is starting up again.

Some of us have already started tomatoes and peppers indoors. There are quite a few threads about it. I try to stagger my sowings, little and often, with enough time to sow a fresh lot if the early seeds fail.

i have fleece, so will have to dig that out. I have a conservatory but its not heated but will be warmer that my greenhouse. so i will be sowing this weekend yay!. i have been planning and planning

When I say indoors, mine are in the kitchen to start. Some of the tougher ones are moved to the unheated greenhouse when they're a bit bigger. They're under bubblewrap tonight!

I've been sitting on my hands, but this weekend will make a start with some indoor sowing for the windowsills. They are looking unnaturally bare for this time of year. Himself will probably have a hissy fit, but tough.

I'm the same Flo, I cleaned my heated props today and the trays I use in them so I'm ready to go, I my sow some pretty's tomorrow though if I get time in the morning.

Not sowed anything yet and won't until mid Feb. My own opinion is there is not enough light to support good plant grow at this time of year. And I am certainly to tight to go artificial.

im itching to get going too. I have a greenhouse to erect first. Fingers crossed it all goes well this weekend.

If there's not enough light then the plants will be leggy. This will result in poor plants....and poor produce.

There are a few you can get going now- as The Large One suggests....but sit on your hands if you can peeps.
If not- hold back some seeds to sow later if the first lot don't come up to expectations!

I have to be fitted with handcuffs at this time of year. I have a box full of seeds less than 5ft from where I am sitting and keep checking to make sure none have gone missing.

I started this coming Friday last year with some Broadbeans. I am going to start off a couple each of my toms and chilli seeds tomorrow though and then work my way through the rest over the next 3 weeks

The way I look at it is if we have a Spring like we have for the last two years where there's that week to 10 days of really warm sunshine, i'd rather have established plants to soak that up than seedlings. The downside obviously is we could have a cloudy wet spring and so the seedlings won't push on but the beauty of starting early is you can resow some more.
