I've started some tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and lavender off indoors. These seem to be doing ok for now (touch wood) but the cauliflowers have gone very leggy so it may have been too early for those, but I only sowed a few so have plenty seed left to try again in a few weeks. For me, its just experimenting at this stage, see what I can get ahead with and what is better off waiting.

Light is more important than heat at this time of year. If you give seeds heat without enough light, then the seedlings will grow leggy, weak and floppy.
Also, if you DO manage to produce good healthy seedlings (and you can), if they're tender plants like chillies & tomatoes, you need to consider where you will keep them until they can go out (in May). All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

I can't wait to start sowing seeds, I'm going to put some tomatoes, peppers, chillies and aubergines in the heated propogator on the kitchen window on the 31st (I'm going to give moon planting a shot this year and it's a fruit day). It's practically February (that's my argument anyway ).

Four years ago I tried sowing seeds under a growlight in January.
I still sow begonias in a heated propagator in January .. but everything else I leave till end February..
It is too expensive and risky to heat the greenhouse in early March.. we get frosts in May - and early sowing means we don't have enough windowsills facing South.
So end Feb is as early as it gets here.
