  • Tips of leaves!

    Help please....
Some of my seedlings have started to brown at the tips of the leaves, they are in my unheated greenhouse by day and in the house at night! They are tiny just seed leaves and first set of true leaves.
Greenhouse gets very hot during the day......
Have I just answered my own question?
    thanks

    Possibly!

Although it could also be tip burn, you don't say what seedlings they are but tip burn is caused by calcium deficiency. This is not necessarily a deficiency in the soil, but in the plant itself - calcium is a very immobile nutrient and when plants are growing fast (as they would be in a greenhouse at this time of year), the calcium can't move quickly enough to the growing tips - hence brown edges. This is often seen in lettuces in mid-summer, although can happen at any time.

Alternatively it could be scorch from the bright sunlight at the mo - you could try shading them with some net curtains or lightweight insect net (i had to do this with some slow growing begonia seedlings on my windowsill)
There's vegetable growing in the family, but I must be adopted

Perhaps the windowsill got cold during the night, i have the same with my cucumbers which are in a plastic greenhouse - i think they got cold over the last few frosts but the new leaves are looking fine now - my courgettes did the same and although i lost the first two leaves they are now lovely and healthy!

They may have got sunburnt. Seedlings are quite delicate and don't like direct sunlight, especially through the glass of a greenhouse or window. Try some shading.
