I grow winter hardy white lisbon in my coldframe all winter. Had some the other day in a stir-fry.

Yes- now is fine- just keep them frost free.
They'll just take longer to germinate at lower temperatures.

I have White Lisbon growing inside on a windowsill; my coldframe (a blowaway type) has sadly passed away. I may well invest in another, better one if I can grow year-round in it rather than just hardening things off.

I've started White Lisbon and Ramrod indoors on the window sill. Will plant some clumps in the greenhouse when they're a little larger.

Welcome to Sowitgrowit too. Why don't you introduce yourself to the Forum? Then we can all say hello!

Thanks for the welcome; will do!

Been lurking for ages, thought I should 'dip a toe in' and post a little.

I've been picking spring onions for sandwiches all month from September/October sowings last year. I have them in containers in the greenhouse and will be starting off the first of this year's crop in the next couple of weeks, weather permitting. As long as you give them enough heat to germinate they're pretty hardy things.

Really wish I had more space to invest in a greenhouse; or just more space in general - Somewhere to grow during the cold months would be lovely.

My searches for who owns the allotments near me have been fruitless - I think I may have a walk down there this weekend and ask a few people how they got on the mythical list.

Not sown anything yet, spring onions will go in late Feb early March in an unheated GH dependent on the weather.

I got in touch with my local council. They are the landlords in most cases. I'm more or less on the border of 2 councils and got a plot in the next door district. They said it makes no difference where you live you just want to have a plot. I had to wait just a year and because I'm on the border I got a plot closest to my home. If I had waited for a plot in my post code it could take me years (I was 48th on the list), and it would be twice as far away.

                    Maybe I'm just lucky...it's a wonderful site.

                    Good Luck!

Was this post misplaced? Couldn't see the link with spring onions!

Am I the only person who can't grow them? Seem to germinate erratically and then take ages to get bigger than chives!

I started some off in heat on 26th Dec, and some just in the unheated greenhouse, effectively these has come up about 3 weeks apart, so I put a few more in yesterday, with the idea of planting out the modules in March when I will need the greenhouse space for other things. OH and son no2 love spring onions, and I've never been very successful before. I think they take a lot longer than I realised to make a decent size, so I was always very late
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Perhaps that's where I go wrong - not giving them enough time. We eat quite a lot of them but never have enough from the plot to keep us going.

I have a container full of White Lisbon that went in in Sept/Oct last year, providing they survive they are only going to need a couple of months of better weather.
