  • Courgette varieties for pots..

    Hi,

I am looking for a courgette variety to grow in large pots. So far I've found 'midnight' and 'patio star' (both F1s). Does anyone have any experience with these varieties, or any other suggestions??

    Thanks
    Jenny

I grew these last year and they were still cropping into October. Just make sure you have a big pot (minimum 40cm) and good drainage. I also used canes to make them grow up.

You can grow pretty much any type of courgette in a pot, I've found they don't do quite as well as in the ground but that's prpobably my dodgy watering when I've been away for a few days. My standard courgette is Striato di Napoli Courgette which I originally got from Real Seeds, have grown in pots and the ground and it's fine for both.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I grew All Green Bush courgettes in pots. Didn't get a huge crop (probably due to lack of watering and insufficient support though), but they were tasty. I'll try again this year. Bigger pots are better, mine overflowed the sides of my pot (30cm IIRR) pretty quickly.

I've grown all sorts of types in pots. They just don't grow into such big bushy plants.

Last year it was Romanesco and it will be again this year, fairly prolific and to me a good taste.

I like to use a 20" dia pot as it helps slightly with the watering issue.

My best courgette last year was "white" courgette from Spain (no other info, sorry). It's a bit sprawly, but didn't get too big to grow in a nice wide container, given enough water/feed.
It kept on cropping long after the others (greens & yellows) gave up the ghost

I tried Striato di Napoli a couple of years ago. They were prolific but not as tasty as others I've grown. How did you find them for taste?

Really nice, more solid than some so less watery. May depend on soil etc but they're one of my essentials every year and have been for about 6 years now.

I grew Midnight last year and they were fantatstic, very prolific and perfect in Morrisons flower buckets. I will be growing them again this year.
