onion seeds

i have never bothered with onions before (lack of space) only spring onions in the cold frame, with me now having an allotment i will be having a go at a few red ones from seed . question is if i sow some in a tray this coming weekend where would i keep them in the cold greenhouse or would they need to be on a window cill in the spare bedroom i would prefer the greenhouse, or should i hold off a bit longer for warmer weather

I'd say either (at different speeds) but as exceptionally chilly just now nowt lost in waiting a few days until this freezing spell over. There was a recent lengthy discussion about this, see

I sowed red onions today in a tray on top of my heated bench with the thermostat set at 18c/65f. At that temperature I expect to get over 90% germination in 12 -15 days. Onions will germinate at lower temperatures but won't achieve the same germination rate in the same time scale.

Mine have been in the greenhouse for a few weeks now. I put them out as soon as I see greenery.

They will go into final positions March ish time.

Ive put a little module pot of onions from seed under flurescants does anyone know if this will help?

Erm - that green stuff that grows out the soil when a seed germinates.

Mine germinated under cover and in a mini blowaway within the greenhouse .......no electricity needed ..

LOL.....I'm a bit confused by your question, Snadger...Photo below is of onion seed Marco.... looks pretty greenish to me. What colour are yours?

I have some onion seeds planted though I think they were too soon (with not enough light), planning to start some more this weekend, all being well. Those ones can have full sun in the shed window, in paper pots, ready to go out.

I've never grown a successful onion. My spring onions are coming on leaps and bounds though.
