  • peas - half pint and other question

    Hello everyone

I have sowed peas half pint (recommended by someone on here, thanks) but I am not sure what size pot to pot them into for their final destination. I have some 3L pots, do you think they would be big enough for one plant in each pot???

Also, I have sowed Kelvedon Wonder which are doing well, but my question is about how many pea plants you need? I gave my friend 3 that I had spare and her husband joked that she would only get about a handful of peas from 3 plants. So, how many pea plants do you sow for a decent crop? I am sowing every 2 - 3 weeks - there are only 2 of us but we eat a lot of vegetables and I was hoping to be able to freeze some as well. Should I be growing a lot more than the 6 at a time I had planned??

    thanks very much

You need quite a few peas to make a meal. I sow about 40+ in a 4' gutter each week expecting 30 to make it; although i've never tried in pots -my guess is to sow 8/10 to a 3l pot.

Most of ours are sugar snap or mangetout after March. (prefer them, less work, less waste, less maggots & harvest over longer period -as peas are only at optimum ripeness for a few hours b4 they start to go over) there are four of us.

Only my humble opinion, and not my usual line on anything-Although, home grown are fantastic when fresh and just picked (sugars start turning to starch and most is gone within two hours); I think it is quite difficult to beat commercially frozen peas. They are picked at optimum sweetness and dropped through nitrogen towers to freeze them quickly and not in one big lump. There are better things to devote time and freezer space to other things.

For bog standard peas, considering time effort and space I agree frozen is most likely best. Grow out of the ordinary for a more cost effective crop.
