Are those of us who don't have luck with loo rolls watering too much or packing too little? I tried beans or tomatoes in them once but some fell apart, and when I moved the rest all the soil fell out of the bottom.

I start my snips on damp kitchen roll paper in a plastic container in the airing cupboard. When germinated I put one seed in a paper roll and when the first leaves appear I plant the complete roll in the ground. This way no spaces in the bed and because the compost in the roll has been sifted and is fine get no forking. Get good crops every year. May be more work than direct planting but it works fine for me.

        I did it in 2008: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...seedlings.html

but now I sow direct into a damp drill, and cover with MPC (to prevent capping)

MPC = Multi purpose Compost, Capping happens when my clay soil gets too dry and sets solid so seedlings can't push through.

I tried the loo roll method last year and found it tooooo messy. The rolls disintergrate as you move them and the soil all drops outall over the place so my roots gots loads of disturbence as I tried to stuff it all back at the same time as planting it deep enough in the hole to work. I needed a holiday after doing a dozen. Then only 2 took anyway the rest packed their bags and left

Parsnips I use a bulb planter to remove some soil then fill with compost and station sow into that (lots of stones) ......Carrots I sow direct ....
loo rolls ....I put mine in one of those deep plastic trays that you get mushrooms and suchlike in , can jam about 9 in one which keeps them upright ....useful for sowing beans, sweetcorn and pricking out cabbages etc like RL says make sure you bury the cardboard when you plant them out ....also use them cut in half for beetroot (anything that doesn't like root disturbance. )
S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig
