Show onions - when to plant out?

my onions for showing are looking good in my greenhouse but most are the thickness of a big pencil! It seems to be a bit too cool to plant them out, i don't want them to get a check in growth - anyone know what the next step is?

I was wondering about re-potting them from their large modules into slightly larger individual pots, and then planting them out good and proper in a month or so?

First attempt at this and i've no idea what i'm doing!

Hi, When's the show(and what standard) and what sort of onions, is this a size thing?!!! or do you want several similar and perfectly formed? Perhaps under cloches? i'm only guessing but i'd say the sooner you can get a big root run established the better- they'll need stability before they swell. certainly won't do them much good to become dry. maybe try planting out some of them and potting the rest on?

I usually show Jap onions and do well because I make sure they are not overskinned and I can dry them well in time; but thats only a local show at the begining of August. polish them with talc!

Mine are in 6" pots now Palustris as are about as thick as your finger.

Thanks to both of you - i think i need to repot them!

Show is not until mid-September and i want them to be quite large and good quality!

Looks like another trip to the garden centre is in order to buy some more pots (i'll just have to hide them from the other half so he doesn't know i bought them!!)

Why is it i have tons of used pots - none of which are the right size and those that are i don't have enough of? Is it like the sock eater that lives in the washing machine??
