planting into frozen soil?

We have had a frost here - and it's my first day of planting anything (I'm VERY excited!). The chickens are in, unhappy but in - and I'm ready,.

And the ground is hard as rocks.

I thought broad beans today, I'm not sure what else - I've sorted out everything that says 'february' on the planting bit on the packet. But I'm not aiming too high - broad beans this morning.

Do I have to wait for defrost? I'm sure once I start moving it about it's not frozen underneath.

dont plant straight into the soil if its rock hard, cover it with plastic to help it warm up - cant you put the broadbeans in pots?, then transplant them when the ground is warmer!

I would give your plants a chance by going with pots for the time being as posted above.

In the mean time if you have a fleece or black plastic peg this down over where you are going to plant and give the soil a chance to warm through.

Most seeds need a minimum temp to germinate and if they dont germinate they will most probably rot.

I agree with the above posts but if you can't resist the temptation and feel you must get something in the ground, try a flask of hot water first.......not for you, for the soil.......
