I don't have much space so I sow mine into paper pots then plant the whole thing once I've got a viable plant.
      Location....East Midlands.

Some fabulous ideas here - I am going to try modules and sow direct when it is warmer!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I've never peeled my roasted beets! I give them a good scrub and throw them in the tin along with plenty of garlic and balsalmic vinegar- perhaps thats why my kids hate them

I have some of those degradable pots I got cheap from Wilko's in November so might start mine off in those first and then plant the pots as and where I can. Saving my empty toilet roll tubes for my Parsnips.

I've never grown beetroot before, but have some free seeds from the magazine and just wondered how long they take from sowing to harvest? I only have a small garden plot and plans for all of it so just wondered if I could fit a few in before the courgettes or beans?

Probably - I'd not want to eat the skins! Bleugh.

I always peel them if I'm eating as a hot veggie with roast or whatever but if I'm going to pickle them then I roast whole with the skins on then just rub them off after they've gone cold. Never fancied eating them though although I suppose they might be OK on small and tender beets.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I sowed two strips of boltardy direct into the soil, late on friday the 17th of Feb. They were under cloches that had been on the ground for two weeks. Today I noticed several of the seeds had started to gerninate (14 day germination), My soil temp has been at 8 degrees minimum and up to 11degrees. I will wait another week for another direct sowing under cloches as I dont think germination will be really great.

This was in worthing, west sussex.

I have always sown direct in the past. But as i am a bit sloppy when it comes to thinning out, this
Year I am sowing into modules to be planted out at a later date.

Me too - I adore beetroot. I shall plant some today. And I'll buy some yellow ones! Thanks Zaz.

have had good success from direct sowing but based on you wise people's advice, I am going to give sowing them in peat pots a go...basing this on the advantage of keeping space free until later and easier thinning...
