Tomato plant in a bucket???

Hi folks...Also posted this on The Undercover section of the forum ...not sure which was correct!

Just doing a bit of research and I was wondering if 3 gallon (14ltr ) bucket is big enough to grow a single tomato plant in ?? They are so much cheaper than the 5 gallon ones!
As I am a complete novice, any guidance will be gratefully gratefully received!

You can grow 3 to a grow bag, which is 27l, 9l each, so I would think they'd be fine. I've kept them in those tall pots in the past (the ones raspberries come in) with no issue other than the obvious frequent watering.

Nip to your local morrisons if you have one, they normally sell flower buckets 8 for a quid. They may even give you them.

Follow BM's advice Morrisons cut flower buckets are ideal. I grow all my GH toms in these.

They do sell them, but down here you have to get there early (like well before 8 am) otherwise they've all gone.

Last year I bought two bags from Wilkos that are meant to be for gathering up leaves and stuff when gardening. Instead I cut a few slits in the bottom, emptied in enough compost to fill it 3/4 up, then put four toms in each. The bag is probably 1.5 foot each way so quite big. That was absolutely fantastic as it was big enough not to dry out too fast. I used tomato fertilizer too, as the compost wasn't the best I've seen.
I also tried a trick of filling up water bottles and left them on the surface early in the spring when the nights were still a bit chilly. That's meant to reserve heat around the plants. I dunno if it did any good, but none of them were touched by the cold!
Excellent results in the end. I had more toms than I could eat, or freeze I'm going for six bags this year, and some up the allotment, cause I'm doing many more varieties, but can't seem to persuade myself to do less plants of each type. LOL

hi i also want to grow tomatoes in pot this year but i want to know if is better use a 30cm square pot or to use a 27l grow bag with a 25cm pot as ring culture?

I've only ever used flower buckets, but from ASDA - they give them away. There would have been loads free after Valentine's Day. Mothering Sunday is coming up, so there'll be plenty after that too!

Another option would be to use a grow bag 'almost' cut in half.

Shake up the bag so the contents loosen a bit, then lay it across your arm so half the bag (and contents) falls either side. Now put this down so each end of the bag is standing on the floor and cut across the top of the middle of the bag. This leaves a strip of plastic (the bottom of the middle) joining the two bags of compost you have created.

Voila! Two containers to grow toms in. Keeping the two parts joined provides stability when the plants become heavy.
