    I think that's the point.

You don't know what is and what isn't GM - and GM pollen can cross with your pure pollen and Monsanto can then sue you as they then 'own' your seeds.

yes but how could they prove that the plants you are growing are from their seeds?

It's the seeds they are concerned with - I've linked to articles for info.

I'm a simple soul, I grow the seed from the packet and expect it not to be genetically modified unless it says differently on the packet.
If it says it's a carrot and what grows is a carrot then I'm happy.
I only save seed from peas and beans and am quite happy to continue to do so without worrying about it.

I am truely sorry Sarz but I still get a childish fit of the giggles when I read the thread title.

Bocking 14 comfrey is a teminator produced by hybridisation me thinks? No GM material included..............

Is termination by hybridisation ok then.........................

                      Just saying......

But when you've got some Bocking 14 you've got it forever and can break off bits of root for other people so can propogate too, with seeds with the termination gene you have to buy and buy again - that seems the main difference to me.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Good job else he'd probably end up being truncated.......
Do they have to state on the packet if seeds are GM ?

The way I see it is that the termination gene dictates that you must buy fresh seed every year to carry on growing that particular crop as it won't set viable seed?
If the seed was an F1 hybrid you would STILL need to buy fresh seed each year unless you wanted to grow mongrels.
Therefore adding a GM termination gene to an F1 hybrid seems a bit pointless to me?.............or am I missing something?

Well, at least with an F1 you have a chance of something edible/nice tasting I'm growing an F1 out, in my second year (of growing it), 3rd year saving seeds - now so will be interested to see what the results are.

If seeds aren't viable and you can't propagate via root cuttings/cuttings/layering/whatever then you will have to go back and buy more seeds.

Also - space would be an issue I guess - or rotation? Would farmers on large commercial scales really want to mess around taking root cuttings, when by comparison seeds are much easier - require less storage and can be easily sown again? I know a lot of us here would make the effort, but I'm trying to think from the other side of the coin.
