One of the reasons for a terminator gene is it reduces the chance that introduced genes will spread to other plants, and it means if there is some unforeseen ecological effect from the GM crop it's easy to control.

Surprised to see that according to wikipedia at least, Monsanto has pledged to not commercialise terminator gene technology.
