It's interesting that a lot of advice is given about buying fresh parsley seed every year and I do, but I always end up sowing last years (just in case) and they usually germinate after about four tries!

Me too - used all my loo rolls for other things though. Suppose I could make newspaper tubes, or put them straight out, hmmm

I have never had any luck with parsnips - maybe I will try chitting this year - thanks for all the info!

Just ate our last home-grown parsnip yesterday - it was delicious. Relaxing now with my pre-prandial sherry (!) but tommorow I'm for planting last year's 'snip seeds on kitchen towel! Thanks guys.

Like Bigmally said, you don't really wait for any leaves to appear, that's just what happens if you're slow planting them! I used last years seed and didn't expect much out of it but it's germinated really well. Hence I can't keep on top of planting all the sprouted seeds!

Take a look at the beetroot thread, I've posted some pics. Just to say I had the same results with Parsnips.

I've always got my parsnips going in toilet roll middles - save them up through the year, fill with compost, two seeds per tube. Stand on ends in a tray, keep moist. Thin down to one when you can see which is strongest. Then plant out the whole thing, toilet roll tube and all. The tube/compost gives the parsnip a good start at growing straight, and means there's no root disturbance. I've always found it totally successful.

Ok, we have a minor problem. No germination yet (but they're always slow, aren't they?). However, developing nasty mildew on windowsill - something the house is prone to and I don't want to encourage it!!).

Should I do away with the seed? Mildew seems to be on PVC window frame only and edge of towel. Was going to chuck the lot, but now wondering if I should try the container approach!

Oh dear, think I have misread something here - mine are in the airing cupboard not on the windowsill - doh
