Trying red shallots from seed this year. Anyone done this? Do they need treating any differently from onions? Want as many as possible as I grew them from sets last year and ARE TO DIE FOR when pickled!!!!

I have had 50:50 success with onions/shallots from seed...2 years ago, from seed I had millions of them germinate and prosper after transplanting...this year - same set up (albeit different seed) but 5 have come up and 3 of them are looking decidedly on the way out already so its sets for me this year...
I am starting to think onions from seed is like making your own puff pastry - life is tooooo short...well, apart from once in a while!

Not really from seed....not at al. Whilst digging a neglected bit from last year, me and the kiddies came across lots of budding shallots from last year, today I split and replanted them. \\\\\\\\\fingers crossed.xthe fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
