Onion fly.

I've been away from veg growing for about 10yrs.
Never used to have a problem with onion fly.
Should I expect any problems now & cover them in fleece,or can I grow them in the open?

Ps growing from sets & in rural west midlands.
would really appreciate any help from wise viners.

Reputedly onion fly are less of a problem with sets than onions grown from seed. I have not covered either but its been a while since i've grown any from seed. Guess i'll find out in August.

Maybe that's why. I always use sets.

thanks paulottee & flummery, that's given me some confidence.so many of the crops have to be covered for various reasons thesedays that 1 less would be a relief.

Nicos-that is actually a sensible idea.both scientific & pragmatic.then if some are flied i can use them 1st & store the rest.by happy coincidence I have planted 2 smallbeds of them.

i love stringing onions & hanging where I can see them but my H has to duck!
