  • working out harvest date for lettuce

I need a few heads of lettuce for a big party end of May - I have some lettuce plants that i sowed some time ago and are hardening off at the mo (they've got about 3-4 true leaves now). Does anyone know if they will be ready by then?

I was going to plant out at the lottie.....but as i need them to crop quickly would it be worthwhile planting into a growbag at home where i can mollycoddle them a bit more? I could intercrop them with some radishes then which would go with the lettuce!!

My seed packets don't say how long to harvest - can anyone hazard a guess? (they're butterhead types)
There's vegetable growing in the family, but I must be adopted
    Happy Gardening!

I just had a look on T&M website and you should expect around 12-16 weeks from sowing (but that doesn't say if its the same in spring as it is in summer etc). When did you get them going? and when in May do you need them for?

Might be worth while getting some cut and come again salad leaves going in a few trays as a back up

You can harvest them anytime you like Protea. It just depends how big you want them and how much lettuce you need. I would plant a back up just in case and it would be nice to have some mixed leaves to go with the butterheads.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
