  • Replanting harvested onions

Daft idea? Maybe, but I am curious.

I have one pretty big red onion left over from last year's harvest. It has now started to produce green leaves. I was wonderting what would happen if I stick it back in the ground. Will it just run to seed?

I think it will. If you aren't going to cook it, plant it and see - onion flowers are pretty.

If you re-plant it it will flower and form a seed head eventually. Good if you want to save your own seed from a particularly good onion, but maybe too time consuming for most of us. Shallots can be re-planted as they grow differently, making a cluster of bulbs from the one you plant.
