Samphire?

Morning All,

Was reading about Samphire is this months mag, have seen it on cooking programs, does anyone have an experience growing?

Yes as you say not a lot of yipee's in the threads. Think I'll give it a go though

You will probably have more success if you go for the rock variety & water it with a mister containing salty water,the marsh variety needs frequent total immersion in salt water.

From the marsh variety,the nicest is always that which is covered at "neap" tides,while the crop that grows higher up & only gets covered by "spring" tides is always "woody" & far less flavoursome.

Never tried growing it but have foraged on several occaisions. I work on the principal that if I can get something for free I don't need to use up valuable growing space to grow it too

It is hard to describe Flo,but in general if you like asparagus you will like samphire.

Did you use plain water or salty water ?

Totally agree Alison however you don't get a lot growing in Tottenham

You're most welcome Flo We had access to marsh samphire for many years,best way to cook is in a steamer,leave it long enough so that when you nip a sample between thumb & forefinger it is just "squishy",plate up & drizzle with melted butter.Get some napkins & pick up a stalk (at the fat end) tip head back,lower into mouth,purse lips tightly & withdraw stalk,repeat until you are full up,wipe face & hands,have another glass of crisp white wine

When is the wild stuff in season? I know where it grows and had a nibble last year but I'll go looking for it this year if its sooooooo good!
