mustard cress

ive been growing mustard cress for quite a few years and was wondering if anyone else grows it , i get an 100gram packet from my local asian supermarket for 39p
boiled egg mustard cress and fresh cracked black pepper sarnies .
the ones i get are black mustard seeds (see pic) they also sell a brown mustard seed which ive also grown the black seems to have broader leaves . its a lot cheaper than buying the cress seed packets

What a great idea. I know of someone who does the same with coriander seeds, twice the amount, half the price of seed companies.

I use a heck of a lot of cress in the summer and thats a lot better price than £1-75 + P&P

There are quite a few suppliers of larger quantities of sprouting seed. I've grown mustard, cress and salad rape for years and buy it in 100g bags but gardenseed.co.uk will do it in 250g bags and I think it's skysprouts who do 500g bags.

A lot of health food shops also stock seeds for sprouting. You'd be daft to buy those little packets from the big seed companies.

Thanks for the heads up for bulk seed, what a great idea. The cress seed is so expensive to buy usually, and i must admit to being a bit parshall for it. Any ideas for cress seed in bulk packs ??

Would nigella work as well I wonder? Might try it. Nigella self-sowed in my garden but I also have a bought tub containing thousands of seeds from Tesco spice aisle.

Any ideas for cress seed in bulk packs ??

the packets of seed i buy are the smallest they sell, they go up in size certainly to the size of abag of sugar i will be calling in this weekend so will check on them . i too get my corriander seed from the same place also fenugreek for for sprouting seeds

if you look close on the last pic at the edges of the sarnie you can just notice a light spreading of salad cream (prefer it to mayo)

I make chopped egg with a mix of mayo and salad cream. I use the same for tuna. My daughters love it.

Morrisons have an asian section now so do you think I'll get them in there? I've never looked for them before as for some reason I didn't realise you could sew them. I have bought the big packets of spices from there. We have a local tesco so I'll try there if not.

Those mustard seeds are good for green manure too, if you have a spare bed for a couple months

Good tip TS. Does it look the same as the commercial mustard green manure when growing? I've used that before.

Great idea, I looked for mustard as green manure and couldn't find it locally. I'll check out the Asian shops in the Medway towns next time I'm that way (not so many now as there used to be though, a lot of Eastern European ones, but I'm not so keen on their food )
