Some of mine are showing their heads too - was quite excited to see them today although there is only anything to see on less than half the plants. Never been able to harvest before but how tall do people let them get before cutting?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My first year to harvest as well. We've had 2 yummy spears from one crown last weekend and 2 more spears just showing from another. As to how many and space. I asked one of the staff at RHS Wisley the same question because I grow in my back garden and don't have space for a proper asparagus bed. At the time I had a 1metre square Link-a-Bord raised bed available and I was told definitely 4 crowns or try 5 (one in each corner and one in middle). In the end I planted 2 rows of 3. There were some spears 1st year and loads last year ,but obviously couldn't harvest, so crossing my fingers that I haven't been too greedy.
