For tender crops (ie not frost hardy) you CANNOT put them outside until after your last frost date. Therefore, you only want to be sowing them 2-3 weeks before your LFD.

It's not just frost with tender crops: they don't like the cold AT ALL. You may well be having heatwave days, but the nights are still cold. They need a minimum soil temperature of 16°C, day and night source

Yes, they're perfect for a container ~ you won't get a huge crop though from dwarfies: for the same footprint, you could grow climbers up canes, and treble (or more) your crop
Thanks TS. Like I said I've never grown them before and was just following what it says in in the HSL catalogue. It even calls them 'hardy' which is a bit misleading. All I know is that it's a French Climbing variety but it doesn't say how tall they will get like it does some of the other varieties.

It's all good fun though ain't it!

Thanks RL and TS - the seedlings appear to be still alive, so maybe I've been lucky this time. Next time I'll warm the compost first if I transplant them early!

These are my red & yellow baby pear toms. Sown at one seed per module (cause I'm tight). They will stay in these modules until they are nearly root bound, then knife down the module to ease extraction and pot on. No fiddling and no damaged plants.

Sorry 2Sheds I know I let the compost get a little to wet.

Is that a little dig? (pun intended )

No dig intended I assure you. I think we all know that when it comes to watering you know your stuff and I would expect a comment especially if VC is lurking.

Me Lurking? Just by chance I've come in from the garden hoping to cool down and its 25c indoors with all the windows and doors open. Its time for a little watering down of myself - but not in the TwoSheds sense - I'm dehydrated!! Its never "Two Early" for a cooling beverage!!
