  • GYO-themed Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations?

As the GYO team get to work on the June issue (yes we really do have to work that far ahead but luckily the sunshine is helping a lot!) we were wondering what all you lovely lottie holders have planned to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee? Are you growing regal-coloured blooms, holding a community plot party, planting trees on the site or growing the royals' favourite veg varieties? Whatever you're doing we want to hear about it!*

    * Please note your comments may be edited and published in the June issue of Grow Your Own.

This is one of those moments where I feel I should keep my metaphorical mouth shut, but I won't.

    1) It seems rather elitist to only ask what 'lottie holders' are planning, while leaving out all those lovely home-growers.

    2) The world will be a much nicer place when people learn that we are all equal, no one person is any more important than anyone else, we're all just having different life-experiences. For that reason I would no more celebrate Liz's jubilee than she would celebrate my wedding anniversary.

Being an NHS worker, I am not allowed to take that day off (yes, I get a day later), so like Billy's wedding, I'll be doing nowt.

Last year we had a Weeding day [and yes, we did spend the day doing gardening] so maybe I need to get my thinking cap on for some Jubilee Puns. I'm currently thinking 'Nubilee' - a free organic gardening workshop for new gardeners...

Glad that I'm not the only one thinking it a bit strange that we're being asked, why would I grow flowers / veg varieties that I wouldn't normally grow to celebrate somebody I'll never meet? I do however get the day off and will be using the opportunity to take my God son away for a few days

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Well I may be growing their favourite veg - how do I know what the Royal family like to eat?
                  Some suggestions -
Jersey Royals and King Edward potatoes,
                  Green Windsor Broad bean,
                  Rhubarb Crown - Victoria,
Any more ideas, Grapes - my garden is calling me!

I have a rose That came with the flat, It totally looked dead, but I rescued it and it bloomed for the first time on the Royal Wedding day last year, so maybe it will bloom for the first time this year on the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

But otherwise I am with Pa & The others, Its just a free day holiday. nothing special.

we're educating our local village on how they can help wildlife through our small local hedgehog charity - not lottie based I'm afraidbut hopefully will encourage a bit more wildlife gardening and a lot less slug pellets!

Our street always has a Big Lunch street party which this year coincides with the jubilee. One of the plans is to have all the kids make a paper crown - so nothing allotment based, nothing other than home grown salad and new potatoes for the street party will have had anything to do with the allotment!

I think our allotment site is having a big BBQ and open allotment day but nothing is concrete yet. We have our next meeting at the end of the month and I'm sure it will be discussed then

Well I do hanging baskets for my mother and myself and we are having a red white and blue theme! Lobelia, trailing gladioli and an upright one (and a sweet pea currant tomato in one of the two) to make it a bit veggified! Cant wait for the flowers to come out and my mum realises!
