I'm trying desperately not to say the wrong thing here... instead I have found the fitting instructions for the Bayliss XL Autovent that is sitting on my kitchen table waiting for a tall man to pass by and fit it.
"The XL Autovent is designed in such a way that it will not open in cold or windy weather. It is fitted with a strong spring to hold it steady but in high winds other windows and doors should be kept closed.
The Autovent should not be harmed by low temperatures and can be left on the window throughout the year."
Nowhere does it say that it needs lubrication.
There are two of these on my other greenhouse and they've been there for about 30 years - without lubrication!

aah ......just reminded myself that this info about lubrication is from the wally who put his auto vent together in the house and wondered why he couldn't get it to close .........

Nothing that a gentle tap with a hammer couldn't put right So I did remove my opener this year.
I'll have to put it back in -one of these days when it's cool enough

Leave my auto openers alone completely. Not had a problem yet

I take my auto openers out overwinter because I grow lettuce in the borders so like to have the windows open for ventilation.

I've had my auto vent for about 15 years and never disconnected it. It is still working with no problems and has gone through some terrible winters, so if I were you Big Mally I would get it connected ASAP and then leave it alone and when you do get freak weather like now you will always have some ventilation.

Sorry to butt in and go off a track a bit, but has anyone ever used an auto vent on a polytunnel door panel? Cheers (slips quietly back into the corner)
Sorry for your loss BM, had a near miss myself. A thoughful neighbour opened the door for me yesterday when I wasn't around, spuds are a bit limp but made it.

I just stick a terracotta plantpot in mine to prop the vents open if the weather isn't hot enough. I have a twiddly knob on mine that can alter the degree to which they open/close, like a valve I suppose.
