My first thought was also WHY

Unless it resulted in a good, tasty crop of both spuds and toms what exactly is the point. I'd be interested to hear Snadger's opinion of the result. Doing something just because you can might be intellectually stimulating but does it have a practical purpose?

IF it results in increased yields in developing countries and helps to feed people I'd be all for it but I am just a little dubious.

Bigger roots to feed the tomatoes aswell as giving you potatoes from it. On the flip side a potato plant doesn't do much above ground except grow leaves and the odd flowers, why not instead have just as much leaf surface area but also have it grow tomatoes?

Copied and pasted from the article:

After decades of being considered just a gardening novelty, they have been recently attracted the keen interest from developing nations such as Kenya and Vietnam, looking to increase the yields of their subsistence farmers

In the words of Chris Bonington I did it jist because it was there.

As usuall I had loads of tomato seedlings left over that were going to be composted, and some potatoes in pots that were of a similar size. Because you can only use ONE potatoe stem I seem to remember it radically cuts down on the potatoe crop you get.
The stem sizes need ti be similar also.
If I was going to do it again, which I'm not, I would leave the other potatoe shoots to grow on as well.

In retrospect, I could have planted a seed potatoe in pot and planted a tomatoe on top of it, let both grow in tandem and get bigger crops from both than grafting the two together?

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

Okay, how about an Apache tattie and a Maja tom? No other tatties available. Alternatives to the Maja are OSU, Dwarf Wax and Wild Galapagos. Any suggestions? Will be able to graft about mid-May. Quite like the Snadgers idea of growing a tattie and tomato in the same pot, so I think I'll get organised for that.

The old bloke on the plot next to me used to graft tomatoes - he had a friend who worked in a place that grew tomatoes commercially so had lots of info from his mate.

Just completed the "merge" (cut off potato leaves and tomato roots.)
Fingers crossed it all took correctly!
