Just one thing to say about gravel !! "CATS". If you use pea shingle it's like a cat litter tray for them, but using 20 to 25mm size shingle deters them from leaving little parcels as they don't like moving this size with their little paws, bless em. I cut my weed supressant with a gas soldering iron, it helps stop it from fraying. I know not everyone has one of these but it's just a suggestion. Hope this helps.

The other thing is that once the weeds get there roots into the permeable membrane they really lock on and are a bitch to get out!
If the woodchip was just on compacted soil or soggy newspaper, weeds that did show there head above ground should be quite easy to pull out I reckon?
I have tried all of the above and woodchips on top of hessian backed carpet. The weeds get through pretty much everything eventually, but the easiest to maintain is the carpet; the cheapest is the newspaper or cardboard!

The most effective, which I have done around raised beds and the greenhouse at home is good quality weed suppressant fabric and gravel - we had a tonne of it last year from a local supplier. Not the cheapest, but certainly thus far the best!

I am going to put black polythene down and then cover with 804 grade stone
        Will post pics when done...

I went with weed fabric and slate mulch over the top but to be honest I'm considering changing it... the slate cut through the fabric over time making it useless (most likely a poor choice in grade of fabric to be honest, i recently picked up a very durable one which probably would have done the job) if time permits plan to put new fabric down, make a wooden frame in the space and put decking boards down...

I don't cut my weed fabric (unless it's EXTRA wide). I just fold it underneath.

Promised a pic, so here goes...
Still a work in progress but considering this was close to being still a building site this time last year and at best was a pile of muck, I am happy enough with my progress....
As you will see from the dodgy carpentry all my own work
Two pics show my middle walkway which i constructed hurriedly last June from sandstone chippings left by my stonemason after work on my entrance wall...

The other pic shows my latest pathway (it was just clay and weeds til now) using 804 grade stone/gravel.....
This is a seperate path to the other one and shows a bit of my new onion bed ( and my finger it appears!!) on the left...
I will take up the sandstone chippings and replace with the 804, as in reality they are too large and jagged for the purpose of a pathway...

will post more pics as I progress...
