They're right! You are a girlie! Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing-'Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel paths with broken dinner-knives. ~ Rudyard Kipling

My allotments are productive year round and I try to make them ornamental year round if possible.
For instance, when you work out the total linear length of rows you can get in a given area, a circle with straight rows across it would have less growing row length than the three concentric circles I have in mine. Alright, it might be a bugger to weed, but I do all my weeding by hand anyway...........I just feel it's more pleasing to the eye, to me at least. My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
