  • Growing Potatoes In A Bag

    Hi everyone

Hope you are enjoying the start of your Easter weekend if you're lucky enough to be off!

I've gone ahead and got some bags for growing potatoes (although I've since seen Monty D suggest growing them in a compost bag!) and some seed potatoes - charlotte and rooster red.

Seeing as they will be in a bag, do they still need to be in full sun or will the shade do? We have some very shady parts of the garden so it would be good to make use of them.

Also, no idea if I need to 'chit' them or if they will be fine as they are. I'm thinking maybe I should wait a few weeks as they will still be sensitive to frost?

    Thanks in advance!

PS.Chitting is not essential but a matter of preference, yeilds are not affected,it just means they may be ready to harvest a little sooner if chitted.

Spuds really need lots of sunlight to perform best.

I grow my main crop in dustbins in full sun. I even go to the trouble of turning the bins once a week so both sides get the same exposure.

i have 22 compost bags that i'm using for spuds, in exactly the same way as monty don showed, except 2 per bag (all earlies) instead of his 3 .... plus 8 large flower pots .... and another 40 spuds in the ground ....

keep them in a sunny spot, but make sure you cover them if there's a frost due .... i have all my bags lined up together in a double row and a huge roll of weed sheeting i can pull over them if frost is due ....

best to find something else for the shady spot .... maybe rhubarb?!?!

When I had my little veg plot I grew spuds in compost bags. If I thought it was going to be a cold night I just rolled a bit more bag up and pegged it shut over them - or threw some more compost/grass clippings/shredded paper over them.
