Overwintering garlic - progress

Hi - I planted sets in October/November. Leaves are pretty yellow and after reading a recent thread I dug one up to look for desease. No white fuzz but the 'bulb' if you could call it that was tiny, and not split either. It resembled a spring onion to be honest. I know there is a lot of growth left to do but does that sound normal at this stage or should it already look like a larger split garlic head?

Sounds absolutely fine - it's only just got warm enough to start it growing again. It's got another 3 months of growing before harvest time. Give it a feed to get it going.

Mine had some comfrey feed this week redser. As RL says, there's plenty of growing time left yet. I'll be harvesting mine probably at the end of June.

Just on feeding, I am growing through weed membrane (don't think I'll bother next time as I have leeks to transplant through it later and that will be awkward). Any suggestions how/what to feed? I don't have comfrey, so I guess some type of general purpose liquid feed?
Or I could tear up the membrane I guess and use FBB.

i never feed mine .... they grow fine in normal soil / compost / whatever ....
i use membrane virtually everywhere, except where the onions / garlic are .... just too many holes to cut .... on the plus side, the water going into the soil there is being taken by your garlic, not by weeds ....

I planted garlic as a companion to carrots last year.

Harvested all the garlic last year, but low and behold, I must've missed bits cos I now have garlic coming up in the same places!

AND I planted more this year to companion this year's carrots...

Self sufficient in garlic or wot?

It's the first time I've fed garlic, but I had a bit of a disappointing yield size-wise last year, so I'm giving it a go to see what happens

I thought the same on my first year of growing garlic, by April it had excellent growth but having a furtle showed me nothing better than a slightly obese (not even morbidly obese) spring onion.

I was told to stick it back in and leave alone until June - true enough I had masses of really wonderful garlic

My 'roof racks' are the staging from the greenhouse which sit behind the shed in summer - or on top to dry stuff
