How well do onions do in pots?

Went a bit crazy a few months ago with the seed sowing me thinks. I've run out of room and still have a good 40 or so to plant out.

Will they do well in the trough type planters? If so how deep do they have to be? (some of these are quite large so filling them right up will seem like a bit of a waste)

Hi LL. I grow all my onions in containers. I like to give them about 6" depth of compost. Think about planting them close together to get more for your money.

I've only ever done spring onion (White Lisbon) in troughs LL, but I didn't completely fill them with compost. I put grass clippings, crocks and some shredded paper in the bottom so's not to waste compost. Worked like a charm, the onions were lovely. Not sure whether this would work for onions proper though. You need someone like PotsTubsDustbins (Colin) to come along and advise.

Those onions look bloomin' brilliant. I remember trying that method after seeing the picture last year, but I failed miserably. I don't think I watered enough

I tend to treat my onions like my spuds plenty of water. Working on the theory that, that is what they both mainly consist of.

I wonder if that's why my onions in the ground don't do very well? Maybe I should be watering them.

I was also inspired by this picture last year and grew onions in much the same containers. A big HIT! Will be doing the same this year.

All I have to do is do it again this year. So far I have 70 mixed red & white onions in. Guess you could say we like onions.
