Roma tomatoes

Just a quick question. I am growing Roma bush tomatoes this year for the first time. I have never tried bush varieties before and wondered if some one could give me an indication as to the height and spread so that I can construct some sort of protection for them.

are you sure roma are a bush variety - if they are i grew them wrong a few years ago, ooops.

Well I'll be blowed. I thought Roma were a cordon type tomato too, but it appears we were wrong Matt. Tomato 'Roma VF' - Tomato Seeds - Thompson & Morgan

hahaha - well the last time i grew it i pinched the side shoot off - maybe thats why i got a bad crop - well im growing them again this year, so i'll leave em be.

Guy next to me grew them last year, they were only about 3' tall and about 2' diameter. He also had 3 panes of glass boxed round them. He said they were dissapointing & he's had his plot over 30 years.

I wouldn't read too much into it Sanjo, it may have just been a bad year. I'm giving them a go anyway.

I grew Roma last year, as bush tomatoes, and had a very good crop despite growing in the shadier part of my garden. I grew them in the ground, and the 3 plants grew into a large tangled heap about 3' high, each plant about 21/2' wide but produced many pounds of tomatoes. I did have to ripen the later ones on the windowsill, due to the shade, but they were good producers until hit by late blight. They tasted ok, better than supermarket but not as good as some varieties.

They were grown from free seeds from a mag, were never fed, pinched out or watered. (one benefit of a slightly shaded plot), and I have more to plant in my new allotment this year, in full sun, which should intensify the flavour.

Thanks folks. I'm only growing them as they are supposed to be good for pasta sauces etc. I'll let you know how I get on.

I grew loads of Roma's last year and found them easy and great for sauces. Ive got some on the go for this year too...A pic from last year...
