I used shredded newspaper, some compost and an old 'hairy pot' as it was made of coir. But I put a sheet of card at the bottom to stop them wandering about as they do wander for the first few weeks.

Being thick didn't come naturally to me, it took over 50 years practice, so.............if worms eat vegetation, why do we encourage them to be amongst our crops?.......

I think I read somewhere that they can eat half there body weight in a day, so in theory if you have 1lb of worms, they should eat 1/2lb scraps per day.......but....... they multiply. That's where I get lost.

                Are you sitting comfortably? Good!
Worms need to have their food chopped small or shredded as they have teeny-weeny little mouths and no teeth. None of the veggies that you grow would fit inside a worm's mouth so they go seeking daintier morsels.
Mind you, I'm sure to be wrong on this because I've been thick for longer than you.

They don't eat veg. They can only eat rotting/decomposing stuff

Just seen these coming up in LIDDL LIDL Great Britain - lidl.co.uk
and wondered about a set of the stacking baskets, especially if they would fit inside my existing "to big to use" wormery - or a wheelie bin. Must measure!

sorry guy i need help (really!!! i always need help) about my wormery...because the wheather is not as good and my 1 month and half old wormery it seem to go very slowly... i know that but my question is: i've been feed them once a week with some veg scrap from the restaurant ( like some salad leaves that are dark or a soft carrots or a little mouldy courgette, peeling, etc) and some eggs shell plus some bit of fruit at home but in small portion ( 200-300 gr of food) but everytime i lift the lid and shift all the paper the food is still there after 3 weeks... now i stop to feed them but i know that they are eating because i can found on top of shredded newspaper some worm casting... is this normal? i know they have 3l of coir bedding to eat as well.. any advice is helpfull

Hi Sarico. I'm definitely not an expert on wormeries but I was a bit disappointed with mine because I thought they'd eat a lot more than they did! At times, nothing seemed to be happening at all. When the weather warms up they'll be more active and be eating and breeding more. More mouths to feed so more food is eaten. I don't think you should worry about them at the moment.

They eat more as they multiply and as it warms up. I scraped a little space in my wormery to pop the food in and covered it up with a few sheets of damp newspaper (they like to be undercover).

One thing I did do was chop up my peelings, etc. Not too small, but I wasn't putting great chunks of potato in.

It's worth noting that they don't really want to eat manky, rotten veg, or your wormery will smell. Just give them surplus, peelings, etc.

Worms have got very tiny mouths. So if there are 100 worms, they are going to eat 5 times less than 500 worms, and 10 times less than 1000 worms. Also, they eat less in the cold. Wormeries will not produce a tray of compost a week - unless you have thousands and thousands of worms in there.

In a month and a half - they are just warming up.

thanks.. i now that will be awile before i harvest the compost..i went to check them again and lift all the paper and have seen them around the food so i guest they are eating... i chopp the food in small dice but i also thought maybe put the veg in a blender ( i've seen one guy in youtube doing that but i'm not sure) or maybe put them in the mincer that we have in the restaurant ( nice and course)...for now i start to collect everything and leave in a bucket in the shed to roten first instead put in the wormery when are still fresh ( was a slice of bread mouldy and i count at least 20 around it)
so let see in lune if they don't eat yet..
                              thanks for the help

Don't put bread in and put your peelings in fresh - there is no need for it to go in a bucket first.
