  • Broccoli seedlings

    Good morning everyone!
I'm new to the site, and indeed new to the world of veggie growing. We've dabbled in tomatoes and good old salad crops for the last couple of years but have started to try a few more different veggies this year - I think I may have caught the growing bug lol!
Anyhoo we started some broccoli off in a propagator in the kitchen window sill a few weeks back and they started growing virtually straight away. When the seedling leaves were nice and big and the plants getting a little leggy I transplanted them on to small pots, kept them on the window sill but took the lid off the propagator. They're doing ok, starting to get the true leaves but the growing seems to have slowed and a few of the "baby" leaves seem to be wilting and getting a little yellow.
Any ideas what I've done wrong?
    Thanks in advance

HI Claire and welcome, firstly, brasicas do not need to be in a propagator, they do just fine in a gold greenhouse/frame outside/or windows sill inside,
The seeds can be all in a little pot until germinated and big enough to prickout/transpant,to either a separate pot or 1 per modual/save your little yogurt pots ,then pop them into the greenhouse/cold frame, when you got 5 or 6 true leaves, start to harden them of buy putting them out side in the day and in at night for aprox 10 days,in you got a gold frame or a blowaway just open it up to the air, they go leggy when not enough daylight, and growth does slow for a while just till the plant settles it's roots into the new bigger space, the lower laves do die of as the plant grows, all the best

Good advice - mine are in front porch with no heating so like a cold frame - a few sprouts, waiting to see if they do as well as yours

Are you giving them to much water? It is very easy to over water small seedlings which will rot the roots.

Thanks for all the reply's and the welcomes!
Maybe have over watered them previously, maybe I should go back to my previous method of gardening and ignore everything! I'll hold off watering them for a bit cos the soil still seems to be pretty moist even after watering them a couple of days ago. Fingers crossed!

I have to say that the seeds I planted in the garden under fleece are doing better than the ones I've lovingly nurtured in the polytunnel... same with the leek seedlings - ones in the garden are definitely progressing faster.

How sweet FF ,but no i don't,it either grows or not,i recone i am guilty of over watering though ,my caulflowers ort to listen to my advice lol, cabages and kal robi? are doing well out in the cold frame, not quite ready yet, they say not to trancepant the latter, but mine grew fine last year,i think you have to plant them in situe before the roots get to big, same as couli's,or it seems to restrict their groth, they get upset anyway

I sowed my calabrese into a pot about a month ago. It's been sat outside the backdoor since and the seedlings are ready to pot on....saves on hardening off.

I've popped the seedling out in my little plastic greenhouse and, after a little lull in their growing, now seem to be going great guns. How big do I need to let them get before i can plant them into their final position. They're ranging from just a couple of inches to around 6", although some seem to have gone a little leggy .
I also read somewhere that they need be be planted quite deep, is this right and how deep do I need to go? Some have recommeneded right up to the lower leaves, seems to be the right thing to do with my leggy little beasties but just wanted your expertise lol
