digging up my garden in the rain!

Hello, I'm planning on digging up the grass in my garden and planting veg there but i have been waiting to get a fence so that the dog will not just dig it all up.

So now i have a fence, and I ahve a week off work.

I've heard you shouldn't dig when the ground is wet, and considering we are in a drought i thought that it would be perfect to do the garden on my week off.

But it has rained all week! Would digging up the garden now be a disaster. I'm running out of time because my veg, which im growing on my windowsill, are getting bigger and i need to plant them soon!

How long would i have to wait for it to not rain till i can dig my garden??

Any advice is welcome!

Whereabouts are you, and is your garden soil light or heavy (sandy or clay)?

Im in bedford and I dont know what my soil is like...

may i sugest a plank or simiar,lay it down to walk on,dig enough to put a few plants in,then move a bit further a along,and so on,that way your not compressing the ground so mush or getting your feet clagged up,it all depends on how desparate the plants are for a new home,and have they been harded of first,also the turf you dig up can be stacked to rot down for future use,see other threads on here,remember,a little at a time will get you there quicker with less frustration,

You can dig in the rain, if you stand on a floorboard (to spread your weight and not compact the soil so much)

Welcome to the Vine QB, put Bedford in your profile and it will appear at the top right of your posts - we can't forget where you are then. Make sure that when you do lift the turf you give the ground a good going over. I took some turf off a patch last year and didn't dig it enough. The earth was so compacted that the plants I put in it couldn't put their roots down so did not grow. Good luck and take care of your back.

Welcome QuizicleBoy. If you've had a drought the chances are the water will have been soaked up. Hope so anyway.
Um.....did you say the plants are on your windowsill. You might have to think of hardening them off before you put them out in the garden. Unless you have something to protect them with of course, like fleece?
