Another bean question....

Just wondering what sort of support (if any) I need for various types of beans??
I know I will need to make a cane tepee for my peas and the runners will be going againest a 6ft wall trellis but Im not sure how high broad beans or dwarf french beans get. Do they need support as well??

dwarf bean support them selves,broad beans,mm,depends how tall they grow,i have found the same variety is differant each year,1 year i had to support with canes every 4ft or so,then string just to keep them in,but only that 1 year,runner/climbing french beans do need support,either canes,or netting,canes being the best,your peas will grow nicely up netting,weave canes top 2 bottom then firm into the ground,every 4ft or so,myself i use chicken wire,also some plastic wire,it also depends on how much stuff you growing,i grow to last the year,where i can,

Nope! Peas don't climb canes. They need pea netting or chicken wire (or string)

Broadies need to be corralled, within a string structure: canes at the corners, string round the outside


Dwarf beans vary in height: I tend to plant them about 4" apart, and just give individual canes as needed (some don't need any support at all

Pea climb with tendrils which hook over supports - like fingers in a way. A cane is too smooth. Whereas beans climb by going round and round so are perfect for your canes. Depending on how big the squares are on your trellis they might climb the trellis. Could you swap the peas and beans?

climbing beans wind themselves naturaly round the canes in an think it's anti clock wise,
peas have tendrils that latch onto the net/chicken wire,whilst the plant it'self just grows up,

They're completely different kinds of plants.
Beans are more like vines, being climbers and twiners. Peas don't twine, they have little tiny sticky tendrils, like tiny hands, that cling onto thin structures. A pea can't wind its stem around a cane, you'd have to tie it on.

ah ha! thanks for clearing that up. Not a problem the runners can go into the raised bed and the peas can grow in a container up the trellis instead!
...that is if it ever stops raining......
