  • Hello fellow food growers

    Hello all,

Have been an avid reader of GYO since the first issue and have finally got around to signing up. Really looking forward to being able to swap info and have another outlet for my veggie madness.

I took on 1/2 a plot last January to see if I enjoyed it and have been bitten by the bud in a bad way. I have now just taken on another 1 1/2 plots and weather permitting will be putting in the hours tomorrow. I currently eat, sleep and breath my allotment and spend any free time I have reading or talking about veg. I've even started converting people and for my friends that's a revalation. As while I'm in the cold digging they are generally nursing hangovers from the night before.

Anyone have any advice on what to do with bossy partners, who have never grown anything in their lives. But who now want to get involved and take over. Currently arguing as he wants to Rotavate my perenial weed strune new plot!!!!!!!!!! he's driving me mad, seriously considering locking him in the shed.

    Hi Emma
How about letting him have a bit of your new plot to "play with" on his own! Perhaps you could get him digging instead of rotavating and wear him out. Seriously be thankful he's interested as mine bought me a strimmer, wheelbarrow, push-pull mower and eats the results but that's about it.
This is a good site for indulging the veggie passion and allows you to let off steam without watching all your friends eyes glaze over! I did the same as you and started with 1/2 plot and have now graduated to one and the original half. Fortunately had a female vegetarian friend who helping out and she's as potty as me, but at least we have a lot of laughs as well as producing some vegetables. Good Luck.

Hi Emma, have you thought of trying a collar and lead?

I'm fortunate in my partner having absolutely no interest whatsoever which is used against him at every opportunity - I sow, I prick out, I re-pot, I plant out, I nurture, I pick - you bet I'm not cooking it as well!!

          Hi Emma,

My better half hasn't any interest either so your lucky. I'm afraid it's a buys toy thing with rotavators try telling him he's got to dig the perennials out first then let him loose

But to end with a quote from my father
"If you don't use the big fork, you can't use a little one"
Meaning if you don't dig you can't eat. Wise words from someone who I wish was here today to help dig my plot !

I've got a him-in-doors bit like that, but he doesn't very often use the rotavator we bought ME last year, just tells me when I should be using it. Also tells me I should propagate my seeds in trays first before I put them into pots. What he didn't notice was that I have used all the trays I have, but to get some more seeds in, I need to use some pots too!!! So if anyone wants an ex builder/carpenter who is always moaning about his bad back, but doesn't like doing anything else, please send me your address!!!!

Hi everyone. I only discovered GYO when I saw the February version in the shops. I have now joined this site and an allotment site i found from a link on here somewhere! Its nice to find like minded people. hubby isn;'t keen on gardening, just telling me how to do it!!! But I am a newby, havn'et really done any gardening for nearly 30 years until we moved to Lincolnshire and I said goodbye to working in London!

Today I was going out to sow some more tomatoe seeds, but I only have a cold greenhouse (bought a 2nd hand gas heater, but can't afford the gas at the moment, so I've put some fleece round and over one of the stagings and an old glass shower door at the back to help keep the fleece away from the glass, and it seems to keep pretty warm in there. We are south facing here, so get all the sun there is (when its there!). Played at throwing the Kong for the dog for a while, but it is bitterly cold out there. no snow yet, but give it time! So I thought I'd come on to the computer an annoy a few people!!!! I'm going to try selling some tomato and runner beans plants out the front when they are ready, adn perhaps later in the year, some vegetables, but there are already loads of people round here who do the same thing. Take Care everyone, have a nice day.

Hi Emma and Grannieannie welcome on board. Emma at least he is interested. My husband will rotavate and cut the grass boarders but that is it. He constantly moans when he has to take me to the allotments and then keeps watching the time - it drives me mad!

                    Hi Grannieannie
If your OH is an ex-builder / carpenter, show him the website that Nick the Grief mentions on the DIY Greenhouse thread, then get him to knock you up some useful stuff for your plot !

                        Hi Rat and Nick,

Perhaps I shouldn't moan really. OH helped me put up the 2 greenshouses I've now got, plus the frame of the polytunnel and he made my slabbed paths that go through the plot. He did insist on staggering the paths though so I've got 2 small lots and 2 larger plots, which doesn't make rotation easy to figure out, but OH says its less boring to look at. He has just finished building his new shed/workshop which we bought 2nd hand, so once he's in there, he'll leave me in peace, but he has 2 windows which overlook my veg patch, so he can keep an eye on me, check that I'm doing it right!!!! lol
