  • Carrots (Early Nantes) - How Big?

Correction - Not early nantes, think they're Nantes Frubund ...

I sowed some early nantes carrots in early october .... I pulled one up yesterday to see how big they'd got .... this is it next to a lighter:

Are they likely to grow much bigger?

October seems a funny time to be sowing early Nantes carrots. My seed packets say sow March to July. No expert on carrots, but I would think that having been in the ground over winter they will now want to produce seed. Use what you have and sow fresh.

i grew mine in large window boxes in the greenhouse over the winter .... they're all outdoors now ...
although having just checked the seed packets, i think it might be nantes frubund .... packet says sow (whenever) to october .... i've got loads of varieties of carrots and the label the missus stuck in the tub only said nantes ....

They'll be delicious to eat at that size and they could get tough if you leave them much longer. Slow growth over the winter because of the cold makes them smaller to harvest (I think)

I always sow some early spring in the tunnel and they get loads bigger than that although nowhere near as big as my main crop ones. I have sown in the autumn before but have never been that impressed with the results.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
